This circular route starts from Harmony Lodge, a dog friendly hotel on Limestone Road , Burniston (GPS grid reference TA 0015 9305). For other walkers there is roadside parking in Limestone Road or a small lay-by in Rocks Lane (see * below).
TURN LEFT and walk down Limestone Road to reach main road (A171). Turn RIGHT on A171 towards Scarborough using left hand footpath. Just before pub TURN LEFT into Rocks Lane (TA 0127 9292). Continue ahead on lane passing over bridge over stream to reach bridge over road*.
CLIMB STEPS to right hand side of bridge then TURN RIGHT along old railway track bed. Follow track bed to main road. Cross road via pelican crossing then turn left. Cross Hawthorn Close and almost immediately TURN RIGHT onto track bed marked with a blue and white footpath/cycle route marker. Follow track to residential road ( Lancaster Way ) and TURN LEFT .
At road junction TURN LEFT (there is a blue and white footpath/cycle route marker on a lamp post opposite) and after a short distance reach another junction with a more major road. Again there is another blue and white marker opposite pointing right BUT TURN LEFT AND FOLLOW MAIN ROAD (quickly passing West Avenue on right). Continue ahead for approx 0.5 miles to reach road junction with A165, Burniston Road .
TURN RIGHT AND CROSS ROAD immediately - continue ahead for approx 100 metres to reach public footpath on left marked with a green and white finger post just beyond a bus stop. TURN LEFT onto footpath via a gate and keeping hedgerow on left follow it to cliff edge.
At cliff edge TURN RIGHT onto Cleveland Way (TA 0313 9140). Continue ahead to reach headland with sea on left and Scalby Beck on right. TURN LEFT and follow path round headland then downhill to footbridge over the beck (in front of Old Scalby Mills pub). Distance walked 4.1 miles from Harmony Lodge.
TURN LEFT along promenade. Just after the Sea Life Centre there are dog restrictions on the beach between 1 May and 30 September. Dogs are welcome on leads along the prom throughout the year. There are many ways to explore Scarborough from here and plenty of town map boards. We continued along the prom beyond the base of the chair lift. At the end of the prom where it joined a road we crossed and climbed a wobbly path uphill towards the Clifton Hotel. Shortly after the hotel there's a particularly good map that clearly shows the route of the cycle track/footpath along the disused railway for the return journey.
THE RETURN JOURNEY STARTS FROM THE MAIN RAILWAY STATION IN WESTBOROUGH (the street name) opposite the theatre. Turn left if leaving station (or right if looking at it) along main road. Pass Methodist church on right and then a little further on the Unitarian Church on left. Cross road opposite Unitarian Church via Pelican crossing and follow road to Safeway Superstore ( i.e. a right hand turn off the main road ). Pass to the left hand side of the store to reach a play area then follow cycle track under bridge. (9.5 miles from Harmony Lodge).
You are now on the old rail track bed and will follow it all the way back to Burniston. After second bridge follow tarmac road with cemetery on right hand side. Near end of cemetery follow tarmac path across playing field close to houses on right. After several hundred metres tarmac footpath reaches a cross paths - CONTINUE AHEAD onto unmade track bed as indicated by blue and white arrow marker on lamppost.
Continue ahead across a bridge over a stream to reach residential area. At the end of the bridge the remains of a sign inform you of a diversion through the residential roads. Follow path into Chichester Close, then TURN LEFT towards main road. At main road TURN RIGHT then almost immediately left on the opposite side into Field Close Road (which you turned out of on the outward route from Burniston).
TURN RIGHT into Lancaster Way (as indicated by blue and white arrow marker on lamppost). At the end of the road TURN RIGHT onto railway track bed and follow it back to Burniston. At road junction, cross road via pelican crossing then follow track bed to bridge. DESCEND STEPS on left hand side just before bridge onto lane. TURN LEFT ON LANE and follow it back to road junction (A171). TURN RIGHT and return to your starting point.
