This circular route starts from Harmony Lodge, a dog friendly hotel in Limestone Road , Burniston (GPS grid reference TA 0015 9305). For other walkers there is roadside parking in Limestone Road.
TURN LEFT and walk down Limestone Road to reach main road (A171). TURN LEFT on A171 towards Whitby using left hand footpath. Pass Cloughton village sign, as road climbs CROSS THE ROAD by traffic junction sign to a bus stop. CONTINUE AHEAD (uphill) then TURN RIGHT into Station Lane .
CONTINUE AHEAD to reach old railway line. TURN LEFT onto old railway track bed via a gate (opposite old station building on your right - ## -). CONTINUE AHEAD passing farm buildings and pond on your left to reach a road bridge over the track bed. Pass under the bridge then TURN IMMEDIATELY LEFT AND UP STEPS . CROSS BRIDGE then follow diverted footpath marker along lane. At break in the stone wall on right, TURN RIGHT and follow footpath marker into field.
Keep dry stone wall on left until you reach a gap. Pass through wall but continue ahead downhill then slightly uphill to reach field boundary by footpath finger post. TURN LEFT along field edge (TA 0163 9488). Follow path to cliff edge. TURN LEFT along Cleveland Way at a fingerpost - a small diversion was in place on the day Hamish walked which took us left uphill, then around a field edge to rejoin Cleveland Way (the proper Cleveland Way went left uphill via steps). Distance to this point approx 1.8 miles.
Follow the clearly defined path all the way to Ravenscar. THE PATH PASSES CLOSE TO THE CLIFF EDGE AT POINTS - if you have the type of dog who chases seagulls he will need to be on the lead at times. Hamish had a close encounter with a fox who was confident on his way over the cliff edge! En route to Ravenscar pass a viewpoint and bench in memory of Ann M. Hazell (TA 0175 9606), pass through Hayburn Wyke (National Trust) - follow Cleveland Way sign in woods - pass over stile after climbing from wood (Hamish easily passed under the fence), pass National Trust sign for Stainton Dale, pass Bent Rigg coastguard lookout (NZ 9919 0086 - offers shelter if needed) and pass National Trust Ravenscar sign. Follow the footpath where it TURNS INLAND BEHIND THE RAVEN HALL HOTEL (NZ 9821 0086 - after about 6 miles total walking).
Pass the rear of the hotel to reach a metalled road. TURN RIGHT along the road following the Cleveland Way sign. TURN LEFT into Ravenhall Road opposite the entrance to the hotel and golf club. Continue ahead uphill passing public toilets on your left after about 50 metres. TURN LEFT at the Church into Church Road . CONTINUE AHEAD past Church Farm Road then TURN LEFT into Loring Road (a semi made up road). Pass a terrace of houses on the right then TURN RIGHT onto an old railway track bed via a gate (marked as National Cycle Route 1 - NZ 9854 0118 - about 7 miles total walking distance).
Follow the railway track bed all the way back to old station buildings at Cloughton (- ## -). Pass through a number of gates, under several bridges and through a disused station en route. Most of the route is downhill on the way back. TURN RIGHT back onto Station Lane then retrace your steps back to the start (i.e. turn left onto A 171 then right into Limestone Road ).
