Grey Mare's Tail Waterfall and Loch Skene - Dumfries & Galloway
- Map - Explorer 330 Moffat and St Mary's Loch
- Distance - About 2.5 miles with option to extend
- Stiles - None
- Date walked - 11.5.04
This route has a steady climb of nearly 300 metres. As it is a 'there and back' route it has the same descent! Most of this is on laid stone steps. There is the alternative of a much easier (and shorter) climb to see the lower part of the falls - this is through the National Trust Visitor Centre (we are not sure if there is a charge for this route). There is also opportunity to extend the route around Loch Skene - a complete circumnavigation looked possible on the day of our walk but wet feet would have been inevitable as the stepping stones to cross Tail Burn were well under water. Parking available in National Trust carpark off A708 Moffat to Selkirk road (grid ref NT 1861 1452) - pay and display for non members.
Hamish took the right hand path - starting from the car park on the right hand side of the burn. Follow the clear path uphill keeping Tail Burn on your left hand side. The first part of the path is steep steps with fine views down valley then of Grey Mare's Tail waterfall. As the path starts to level out there are views of other smaller waterfalls further up, then of hills surrounding the loch. On reaching the loch take time to admire the views or extend the route if desired. We rested for a short while before returning. Total time taken there and back was about 2 hours.
