Stowey Castle from Nether Stowey - 1 easy - GPX NETHER CAS

The Old Cider House 25 Castle Street Nether Stowey Bridgwater Somerset TA5 1LN

This route is based on one supplied for dog owners at The Old Cider House B&B and was walked by Hamish from there. Non residents arriving by car should find on street parking close by.
The only stile leads from Castle Hill into the area previously castle grounds. When we walked it was quite low and with platforms on either side (rather than planks) so it was easy to lift Hamish over. Most younger, more agile dogs should get over without too much assistance.
If you would like to receive by e mail a free GPX file (track converted from the trail we walked) produced by our Satmap Active 10 GPS please contact us quoting GPX Nether Cas. Please note this file is for personal use only and must not be further reproduced without our explicit permission. Those wishing to use the file commercially should make their intentions clear when contacting us. Please note we can not guarantee this file will work successfully on any other GPS or that the data might be corrupted in transfer but we are confident, in most cases when it is loaded into a robust GPS, it will greatly assist navigation.

From The Old Cider House TURN RIGHT UPHILL away from Nether Stowey. Follow Castle Street uphill into Castle Hill (passing Mount Road on the right and keeping left as Butcher's Lane forks off to the right as Castle Street becomes Castle Hill).
After about half a mile in total, near the top of the hill, by a white house on your right and a post box and foot path sign on your left, TURN RIGHT over a stile to the left hand side of double gates (the one nearer the road was locked when we walked). The stile leads into a field giving access to the ruins of Stowey Castle – with an information board just in the field. The mounds are worth exploring and provide good views on a decent day (when we walked it was sunny but haze prevented the long distance views that must be available).
After exploring the castle site RETURN OVER THE STILE – or if, having reached the stile, you decide not to cross – go DIRECTLY OVER CASTLE HILL following the footpath sign opposite (i.e. turn left off Castle Hill if you didn't go into the castle area). The path goes through a house's parking area then down some steps and through a kissing gate into a field. TURN HALF LEFT across the field aiming for another kissing gate. GO AHEAD through the gate then downhill via an enclosed footpath.
TURN LEFT when you reach a metalled lane (South Lane) then RIGHT at the T-junction with Castle Street to return to The Old Cider House.
This route is based on one supplied for dog owners at The Old Cider House B&B (one of our dog friendly guesthouse advertisers) and was walked by Hamish from there. Non residents arriving by car should find on street parking close by.

TURN LEFT when you reach a metalled lane (South Lane) then RIGHT at the T-junction with Castle Street to return to The Old Cider House
