Radnor Wood - Clun 4 easy

Park at the Memorial Hall on the north east side of Clun (grid reference SO 3025 8115). Leave the car park and turn left onto a lane. Pass a Youth Hostel to reach a sharp left-hand bend in the lane. At the bend TURN RIGHT onto a bridle path (said to be an ancient track).

Follow the track first in an easterly direction then northeast uphill. CROSS A STREAM continuing uphill. Pass through two gates - one either side of a field. Enter wood through gate. KEEP AHEAD FOR A SHORT DISTANCE THEN TURN RIGHT ONTO MARKED PERMISSIVE PATH.

The path passes through woodland to reach a forest track. TURN LEFT and follow the track for about ½ mile. TURN RIGHT onto marked permissive path just after distant hills come into view. This is a path not a track so you may need to look carefully for the sign.

Follow the path as it climbs through mainly coniferous woodland. Eventually a more open area with deciduous trees is reached. This is an ancient site with the remains of earthworks. CONTINUE on path (westerly) to reach a more obvious track. TURN RIGHT - good views of Clun soon become apparent through the tree screen on the left. The track soon BEARS RIGHT back towards the wood. After about 150 meters TURN LEFT back down the permissive path you arrived on. Walk back to the bridle path near the edge of the wood then TURN LEFT TO RETRACE YOUR STEPS back to the car park.

Hamish lengthened the walk by turning right on regaining the bridle path rather than turning left back to the car park. He walked to Clunton via the farm at Stepple but encountered some rather lively dogs doing their guard duty. Hamish returned to Clun via Sowdley Wood (south of the B4368)
