A dog friendly walk from DogPeople
Crickhowell, Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal (3 easy)

This circular walk starts in front of The Bear Hotel (and bar) at Crickhowell (a hotel and place to eat with your dogs). Car parking and toilets are available nearby in a public car park, accessible via Greenhill Way from the main A40 road. There is opportunity for dogs to be off the lead on the towpath beside the canal.
From front of The Bear Hotel (with your back to arch) TURN LEFT to pass Standard Street (i.e. don't go down the High St.). Pass public toilets and 'phone box. Cross main road (A40) by Nat West Bank and TURN RIGHT onto footpath marked by green and white finger post. Follow metalled path through castle ruins and go through wooden gate onto metalled lane.
TURN RIGHT on lane then TURN LEFT downhill at road junction in front of police station (this is no entry for vehicles). Follow lane downhill passing the Bridge Inn. CROSS BRIDGE over River Usk. At road junction with traffic lights, CROSS ROAD (i.e. straight ahead) and go through metal kissing gate onto metalled footpath. Pass cemetery on left then through another metal kissing gate.
At fork in path TURN RIGHT through another metal gate and over a stone footbridge. Go through another metal kissing gate then pass church on your right hand side. Pass under stone arch gate then TURN LEFT on road. Pass over bridge over stream to reach road junction.
TURN RIGHT signposted to Beaufort. Keep to pavement crossing road where necessary. CONTINUE AHEAD passing road junction on left with signs for community hall and school. TURN RIGHT just before chapel signposted to Beaufort 7 miles. Continue with chapel on your left hand side, slightly uphill.
Join towpath for canal via footpath to LEFT of bridge when you reach it. TURN RIGHT under bridge (number 115) and follow towpath with canal on your left hand side passing remains of stone wharf on opposite bank. Views soon become available on right hand side over to Crickhowell and beyond.
Pass under next bridge (number 116) and ahead under wooden footbridge (number 117) - great views again on right hand side. TURN RIGHT onto lane through gate just before bridge (number 118) or over stone stile just beyond it.
TURN RIGHT sharply downhill on lane. Follow steeply downhill to reach road junction. TURN RIGHT on lane, ignoring lane on left hand side marked as public footpath after approximately 300 metres. Continue on lane towards church tower. When you reach road junction at Church View TURN LEFT, then after a few steps TURN LEFT again through stone arch (used earlier) beside church.
Follow the footpath back to the bridge over the River Usk (TURN LEFT at only junction just after stone footbridge). Cross road bridge then keep left at the Bridge Inn. Pass Salmons Cottage on your right hand side and Lets Paint Pottery on your left hand side, then uphill on pavement heading towards church spire.
Pass Lamb House on your right hand side - cross to walk on pavement on right hand side just before Mill Street. TURN RIGHT on set of stone steps just before St Edmunds Church. Follow metalled footpath between metal fences with graves on both sides. Pass through church lych gate onto metalled lane. Continue ahead passing Ye Olde Slaughter House on your left hand side to reach road junction. TURN LEFT into High Street then ahead to The Bear Hotel (a hotel to stay at with your dogs).
