Flodden Field near Branxton

Hamish stopped at the memorial on his way from Moffat to Wooler. The free car park on the edge of Branxton is well signposted from the A697.

A short set of steps leads up from the car park (NT 888 373) to the memorial to the dead of both England and Scotland following the battle on 9 th September 1513 . The memorial provides a good view over the battlefield from the English 'start line'.

Even on a bright day the field seemed to have an 'atmosphere'. This became more evident once we started to walk the battlefield trail towards the spot where the first major encounter took place. Hamish seemed oblivious!

The trail leads to the centre of the battlefield then along the low ground to a lane leading back towards Branxton. Turn left along the lane, then left again in the village. This takes you past the church (where an excellent booklet on the battle is available), then back to the car park.

Part way along the trail there is opportunity to divert up the opposite hill to gain a view of how the field would have looked to the Scots. You could simply retrace your steps from here rather than walk the lanes back to the car park.
