- Map - Explorer 437, Ben Wyvis & Strathpeffer
- Distance - About 3 miles
- Stiles - One (avoidable)
- Date walked - 22.4.06
Hamish walked this route on his first outing whilst staying at a lodge in Blackmuir Wood, Strathpeffer (see dog friendly holiday cottages in this area). The walk starts from the nearby public car park for Blackmuir Wood and passes the lodges, grid ref NH 4795 5733. The entrance to the wood and car park is at the western end of Strathpeffer by the old youth hostel building on the A834.
Leave Blackmuir car park on main track marked "No access for unauthorised vehicles" (i.e. heading away from the road). Pass pond on your right hand side (RHS), then Fir Lodges. Go through (or besides) metal gate (access for RADAR parking) and follow main track gently uphill to the marked parking spot.
TURN LEFT on track marked with green, blue and red route hoops (waymarked trails). Pass red marked post then bear RIGHT following green and blue markers. Follow clear path (one section diverted because of fallen trees when we walked). The path winds through the wood, later passing close to edge of wood on your left hand side (LHS) with views of Strathpeffer.
TURN LEFT at wooden finger post to Strathpeffer. A short diversion ahead to Touchstone Maze is well worthwhile and only adds a few yards to the route - but you'll need to return to the finger post to continue. Cross a stile into a field and continue ahead towards Ben Wyvis in the distance (Hamish scrabbled through the fence besides the stile so did not need lifting). Keep to the left of the field with a fence on your LHS. At bottom of field join a metalled road and follow it fairly steeply downhill through houses to reach a more major road at a T-Junction by a parking area.
TURN LEFT on the road through Strathpeffer passing Spa Pavilion on your LHS; keep on up and out of the town (pavement on RHS is best as it goes all the way). Near top of hill, as road bears left, TURN LEFT and cross road (in front of old youth hostel) as marked by wooden fingerpost to "Forest Trail Knockfarrel and Dingwall". Follow track to reach Blackmuir Woods car park or lodges.
