This walk starts off in the picturesque Wye valley and climbs to the top of a wooded ridge. The Devil's Pulpit is a rocky outcrop with stunning views of Tintern Abbey and village. Hamish returned by the same route and did most of the walk 'off the lead'. The walk could be lengthened by continuing along the ridge path and then returning via the lower path (i.e. a clockwise circuit).
Parking is available in Tintern village on riverside off A466 road. You might choose to start before or after a visit with your dog to The Old Station.
3 mile route. Walk along main road keeping river on your left hand side, pass public toilets on your left and then TURN LEFT ON FOOTPATH just before Abbey Mill Craft Centre. Cross River Wye via wooden bridge - grid reference SO 5300 0025 and FOLLOW PATH TO THE RIGHT (DOWN RIVER) for a short way until you reach another foot path on your LEFT marked by metal posts. Go through posts on uphill path. Keep going uphill following signs for Devil's Pulpit, if in doubt keep going up!
When footpath emerges from tree line on to a track near to a communications mast TURN RIGHT and then ALMOST IMMEDIATELY LEFT on to another track (if you descend for more than 50 metres you have missed the track). The track soon becomes a footpath - still going uphill until you reach Offa's Dyke Path. TURN RIGHT (sign posted Devil's Pulpit & Sedbury). After approx ½ mile you reach the Devil's Pulpit - grid reference 5430 9953 (by rocks and Yew trees).
Retrace your route to Tintern or continue along ridge for a longer walk.
