Hamish walked this while staying at The Sandrock Hotelv Lynton (no longer a dog friendly hotel advertiser - rid reference SS 7158 4974). The majority of the walk is easy going on tarmac paths, minor road and pavements with some good sea views. There is a longer uphill section on a stony track to navigate Hollerday Hill towards the end of the route but this can be avoided by taking an optional short cut back to the hotel.
From hotel TURN RIGHT along pavement and pass old cemetery on right hand side (RHS). CROSS ROAD to pavement opposite and continue in same direction. Just before road bears left you get a first view of Valley of Rocks.
CROSS ROAD opposite Exmoor National Park Picnic Area (toilets a bit further on) and go through metal gate. Follow tarmac path signed to Lynton & Lynmouth via North Walk. Keep to RHS of cricket ground. Bear RIGHT with path as it reaches the coast with good sea views (we saw our first goats here). Go downhill to path junction (shelter on RHS) and TURN RIGHT (more-or-less ahead) signed Coastal Path Lynton and Lynmouth.
Follow tarmac path until it becomes a lane, note useful scoop bin by first house. Go ahead on lane over cliff railway bridge shortly reaching a fork in the lane. KEEP right uphill (signed to Lynton by fingerpost over wall on left hand side) to reach road junction with church on left hand side (LHS).
TURN RIGHT and go along road past entrance to Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway. Just before Town Hall TURN RIGHT up lane marked to Hollerday Hill by a finger post. For short cut do not make this right turn but continue ahead on pavement for about quarter of a mile to reach The Sandrock Hotel on your RHS. Note there are public toilets at the Town Hall.
Keep to the LEFT as lane forks in front of a stone and tile hung cottage. Go ahead through valley cut in rocks then bear left uphill as the tarmac lane changes to a stony track. Note scoop bin on post blocking track to traffic. As track bears hard left signposted to site of Hollerday House, KEEP AHEAD uphill signposted Coast Path.
Follow track steadily uphill and up a few steps just before the track emerges from the trees. There are great sea views along the next section of path. As path nears Valley of Rocks follow it round a left bend inland (ahead is a bench and viewing point). KEEP AHEAD signposted to Lynton do not take a path on right signposted to Valley of Rocks.
Keep to main path into woods when you reach them ? through dry stone wall. TURN RIGHT at track junction (more-or-less ahead) going downhill. Keep RIGHT at fork after very short distance to reach cross tracks marked with a fingerpost (bench just beyond).
TURN RIGHT signposted Snowball. Follow clear path down a few steps then steadily downhill to reach metalled road by old cemetery. Go through wooden gate, TURN LEFT and follow pavement back to the start.
