Hamish and his people parked the car on the east side of the reservoir near Bunsal Cob (at the southern end) at grid reference SK 0178 7590. The car park has public toilets. We arrived via the Buxton to Whaley Bridge road (A5004).
Start towards the reservoirs - slightly downhill at first. Before reaching the reservoir buildings TURN RIGHT as indicated by a public footpath sign along a metalled drive (passing a metal barrier as you go). Follow the drive downhill to the edge of the reservoir to start an anti-clockwise circumnavigation. Go ahead through a gate where the tarmacing finishes and keep ahead on a roughly made track (a disused railway). The reservoir is on your left with a wooded bank on your right. Pass a barrier to reach another metalled drive.
TURN LEFT along the road at the head of the reservoir and cross the dam. A wall is on your left and a hedge on the right. A gap in the hedge half way across the dam allows you to look down the Goyt Valley into the original valley bottom.
Shortly after crossing the dam TURN LEFT on a metalled lane signposted to Old Field Farm (also Forestry Commission sign 'No Unauthorised Parking Beyond This Point'). Just before the lane bears right BEAR LEFT onto a footpath via a wooden gate. Follow the footpath into the woods as signed by a finger post to Errwood Dam. CONTINUE AHEAD signposted Errwood via woodland walk (left hand option for waterside walk can be taken and will rejoin this route further on). Where the main track bears right and a little uphill (signposted Woodland Walk) BEAR LEFT through a pair of old stone gateposts (signposted Fernilee Reservoir).
Follow this smaller footpath as is zigzags downhill close to a valley and stream on your right hand side. Where the path reaches a T-junction close to the reservoir TURN RIGHT (this is the path you would have reached had you chosen the waterside walk). Continue in the direction signed to Errwood Hall over a footbridge. CONTINUE AHEAD towards Errwood as a path joins from right (it is signposted Fernilee via Woodland Walk).
Follow the main path - don't take footpath on right to Errwood - keeping the reservoir on your left until you reach the dam between the two reservoirs. Go ahead through a wooden gate then TURN LEFT, downhill at first, as indicated by a finger post to Bunsal and Fernilee Circular. Cross the southern end of Fernilee Reservoir under the dam for Errwood Reservoir. Pass the tower in Fernilee Reservoir then through a wooden gate (besides a larger metal gate) onto a metalled drive. Follow the drive uphill to return to the carpark.
