A dog friendly walk from DogPeople
Wansfell Walk (5.5 steady)
- Map - Outdoor Leisure 7 - South Eastern Lakes
- Distance - About 5.5 miles with 1800 feet of total ascent for the full route.
- Stiles - Two ladder types can be avoided by using alternative route to Wansfell Pike
- Date walked - 9 June 2013
Lottie walked from Windermere lodges ( a former customer) at Limefitt Park on 9 June 2013. If not staying here there are a couple of parking spaces on the A 592 between the park entrance and Troutbeck Church and the bus stops outside the entrance (grid reference NY4140 0302). There are about 10 parking spaces in the road from the church to Troutbeck village.
The route we walked included two ladder stiles that Lottie had to be lifted over. We managed this easily but Hamish would have been a challenge. We do not recommend the section with stiles for large dogs but a shorter stile free route, with nearly as much variety, is possible by using the 'tourist route' to and from Wansfell Pike.
We had lunch at The Mortal Man and the core of this route could be walked from there.
If you would like to receive by e mail a free GPX file (track converted from the trail we walked) produced by our Satmap Active 10 GPS please contact us quoting GPX Wans. Please note this file is for personal use only and must not be further reproduced without our explicit permission. Those wishing to use the file commercially should make their intentions clear when contacting us. Please note we can not guarantee this file will work successfully on any other GPS or that the data might not be corrupted in transfer but we are confident, in most cases when it is loaded into a robust GPS, it will greatly assist navigation.
Join the bridlepath to the right of the church then, just beyond the children's play area, TURN RIGHT onto a footpath. Follow the path up to a lane / bridlepath junction. TURN LEFT then, a short way on, RIGHT on to a bridlepath. Follow this uphill to reach a metalled lane. TURN LEFT then, after a short distance, RIGHT on to a bridlepath by farm buildings. Follow this (Nanny Lane) uphill. As the track becomes a green lane the 'tourist route' turns left to Wansfell Pike; if you want to avoid the stiles take this clear route (grid reference NY4028 0406). If continuing GO AHEAD uphill on the green lane. TURN LEFT over a wooden step stile at the top of the lane. Follow the path diagonally right up the hill to reach a cairn on the summit (just before reaching a wall). Once you've admired the views turn left along the ridge (keeping a wall on your right hand side and crossing a stone step stile just short of Wansfell Pike).
At Wansfell Pike take in the views of the fells, Ambleside and Lake Windermere but don't go through the gate leading to the descent into Ambleside (grid reference 3938 0417). TURN LEFT and follow the 'tourist path' back down to Nanny Lane. TURN RIGHT and follow the bridlepath back down to the road. TURN LEFT and follow the lane to The Mortal Man (grid reference NY4110 0348). TURN RIGHT here to reach the entrance and, when fully refreshed, go to the T Junction just below the car park. TURN RIGHT and follow the lane to the lane/ bridleway / footpath junction reached on the outward journey. KEEP AHEAD onto the footpath signed to the church. At the bottom TURN LEFT to reach the main road, then LEFT again for Limefitt.
