Hamish visited Helmsley Castle before this walk (YO62 5AB) and Rievaulx Abbey in the middle (YO62 5LB).

The route, and Cleveland Way, starts from the corner of Helmsley's long stay car park (this is the car park nearest the castle). Limited free on street parking is available in the village.

Follow the clear track marked as The Cleveland Way out of the car park (opposite its entrance). Keep to the track as it climbs away from the village through fields via left and right hand turns before entering trees (views of the castle over your left shoulder as you go). Keep to the main path through the trees going down then up a valley as you go. After the trees keep ahead past a gatehouse on a ridge line - fine views to your left.

Keep ahead, mostly downhill, through more trees until you reach a metalled lane. TURN LEFT keeping to a path raised above the lane on its left hand side at first. At lanes T-junction TURN RIGHT as indicated to Rievaulx (you should see the ruins on your right just before the junction - don't go ahead over a fine old stone bridge). Follow the lane to reach the abbey, its car park and toilets etc. on your right hand side.

If walking back to Helmsley retrace your route after visiting the abbey.
