Hamish walked this route whilst staying at The Inn with the Well. His people enjoyed a drink there before the walk and had a meal later in the day. The route uses a mix of quiet country lanes through the picturesque village and sections of The Ridgeway (long distance path) and a disused railway line. Hamish was off the lead about half of the walk.
From The Inn with the Well (at grid reference SU 2027 7434) turn left from the car park (away from the main road bridge). TURN RIGHT at the first road junction and pass the old Post Office and village store. Follow lane through the village and passed the school and Church Lane. Keep ahead on the lane as it leaves the village via an 'S' bend, then uphill towards a right hand bend.
TURN LEFT as the road bends right and join a byway marked as The Ridgeway and signed to Liddington Castle. Follow the byway, sunken in places, to a junction. TURN LEFT (still signed as The Ridgeway), a little downhill, then between pretty thatched cottages to reach an A road.
CROSS the road WITH CARE and continue ahead on a lane still signed as The Ridgeway to Liddington Castle. Pass another thatched cottage or two. TURN LEFT onto a cycle route (number 45) just before the supports for an old railway bridge over the lane. Go slightly uphill to reach the old railway track bed (a bridleway runs lower and to the left of the track bed). Follow the track bed and cycle route to a metalled lane.
TURN LEFT on the lane - although this is a small lane you may need to TAKE CARE as a couple of lorries used it when we walked. At cross roads TURN LEFT and pass under the road bridge to return to The Inn with the Well - where you can stay with your dog as well as enjoy a meal with him or her.
