School Lane car park at SD 732 565 (BB7 4TS. Approx 2.5 miles from Slaidburn off B6478.
Start at the School Lane car park at SD 732 565 (BB7 4TS). There’s a choice of routes including an 8 miles circumnavigation of the reservoir. Parking was charged at £3 for the day when we walked.
Murphy walked the Dale Head Ramble said to be 3.2 miles. We walked clockwise starting in the bottom right of the car park near the reservoir. The route is marked with mostly yellow banded posts although a few are nearer the orange implied by the information panel. Nearly all the way is on stone laid tracks or paths but a short section of public footpath used by bikers was a little muddy and rutted when we walked. Murphy was pleased to find the path passed by Bottom Beck about half way round and he took opportunity for a drink. Much of the route passes through coniferous woodland but bluebells were in evidence and these together with some old oaks hinted at the wood’s ancient past. Dogs with good recall could be off lead the whole way around; Murphy stayed on the lead as the possibility of furry beasties would have overridden his sense of hearing!
There’s a picnic area a short distance from the car park and a couple of wildlife hides for watching water fowl on the reservoir. There’s also uncovered footings of a church in the car park.
