Dog friendly articles and ideas
Hamish started from the car park of The Chequers Inn (no longer a customer following a change of ownership so may not now be dog friendly) in Doddington (plenty of parking for patrons of the pub - grid reference TQ 9349 5731). From there he TURNED RIGHT up the lane. Just after the hill levels out TURN RIGHT onto a footpath (marked by a green and white finger post and concrete marker) between the last two bungalows.
GO AHEAD on the path into a field with a fence on your right hand side (RHS) at first. On opposite side of field by a tree line go left a little to reach a wooden kissing gate. Go through the gate, across a small field then ahead through another kissing gate. Go ahead through a parking area for the church to reach a metalled lane.
TURN LEFT along the metalled lane and pass in front of the church 'The Beheading of St John the Baptist Doddington'. Follow lane past fine gateway to Doddington Park with a half-timbered house just beyond. Then pass a bungalow on your left hand side (LHS) then, just before a white cottage on your right, TURN RIGHT onto a footpath (this is marked by a finger post on the LHS of the road). Follow the track and pass by a metal gate on its left hand side. Note sign just beyond the gate 'private sporting, please keep to paths, keep dogs on leads, no riding'. Follow the clear path - more a track (some evidence of tarmac further on). Follow it through a number of bends until you reach a T-junction marked by a post with yellow arrow markers.
TURN LEFT and follow the broad track. As a building comes into view directly ahead pass a six bar metal gate to reach a yellow arrow marker post. TURN LEFT as indicated (not ahead towards the buildings). GO AHEAD past another six bar metal gate onto a clear track - now mostly 'green' but with some evidence of tarmac still showing through on occasions - and under power cables at first. Follow this track ahead as it becomes properly metalled where a drive bears left towards Keepers Cottage. Stay on the main track - avoiding side tracks etc. - and follow it as it bears left just before the M2. Cross the M2 via the bridge. As a building comes into view directly ahead pass a six bar metal gate to reach a yellow arrow marker post. TURN LEFT as indicated (not ahead towards the buildings). TURN LEFT onto a metalled lane on the opposite side of the M2. This is not a busy lane but can be noisy at it runs parallel with the motorway for a while - as ever on country lanes take care and keep to the right hand side to face oncoming traffic. On a clear day you should get glimpses of the Swale and Sheppey to your right along this stretch after passing a house. Follow the lane around a right hand bend to reach a T-junction.
TURN LEFT (signposted Doddington and Lenham) then, after about 80 metres, TURN RIGHT onto a metalled lane signposted to Kingsdown. GO AHEAD into Kingdown passing Ludgate Lane on your RHS. Note a footpaths information board in a lay-by a short way further on and a number of interesting old houses in the village.
TURN LEFT at Hole Street Farm almost at the end of the village onto a drive (bridleway) between a converted oast (on your RHS) and house (on your LHS). Keep left on the track as it passes silos then a weather-boarded house (on your LHS). Follow the drive as it bears right at the end of the farm buildings then over the M 2 via a bridge.
GO AHEAD after the bridge until the lane bears hard right towards a church (The Old Rectory). TURN LEFT onto a clear track to the LHS of a hedgerow as indicated by a yellow arrow marker on a post by the bend. GO AHEAD at the end of the hedge / trees onto the edge of a field as indicated by a yellow arrow marker - then ahead across the field beyond an old stile. GO AHEAD across the next field beyond a short section of hedgerow, then AHEAD again towards a power cable pole. GO AHEAD again between an evergreen hedge / tree-line and a fence to reach a metalled lane via a wooden kissing gate.
TURN RIGHT on the lane. At road junction GO AHEAD towards Doddington using a pavement on the left hand side. Follow the lane back to the start.
