This route starts from a car park just north west of Brighstone on a minor road towards Calbourne at grid reference SZ 421 846. The car park has an information board and 'scoop' bin. The walk is pretty easy going (we wore ordinary shoes) and is on clear paths. The views are excellent – especially over the coast and sea to the south but there are also some views north across the sea to the mainland.
From the car park go through a bridleway gate besides a farm gate onto the Down. Almost at once bear right and go through a similar set of gates into a wood. Note signs for a 1.8 km walk (a footprint marker on posts). Follow the markers on a clear woodland track through the trees – uphill for most of the way. Just before a cross tracks turn hard left uphill – as indicated by the footprint sign. Follow the path to the top of the hill to reach the Down.
Go through a wooden bridleway type path to reach the open Down. The marked path TURNS LEFT downhill. We turned right and climbed a short distance to the top of the Down to view three barrows with their associated information board. We then retraced our steps, past the gate from the wood, and followed the clear track back to the car park.
