This route starts and finishes at The Castle Inn. Limited free parking is available for patrons only whether staying in the hotel or eating and drinking at this Top Dog inn. The directors walked whilst Hamish had a nap in our bedroom in the inn. Some on street parking is available reasonably close by.
If you would like to receive by e mail a free GPX file (track converted from the trail we walked with a minor recce diversion) produced by our Satmap Active 10 GPS please contact us quoting GPX LUL CAS INN. Please note this file is for personal use only and must not be further reproduced without our explicit permission. Those wishing to use the file commercially should make their intentions clear when contacting us. Please note we can not guarantee this file will work successfully on any other GPS or that the data might not be corrupted in transfer but we are confident, in most cases when it is loaded into a robust GPS, it will greatly assist navigation.
From The Castle Inn TURN RIGHT towards West Lulworth and Lulworth Cove. Walk on the right hand side of the road taking care where there is no pavement. FORK RIGHT by a war memorial (not left towards the cove) then , a short way further on, TURN RIGHT up steps marked as a footpath (Purbeck Way). KEEP AHEAD uphill as a track joins from the right to reach a field passing a broken down stile.
Continue AHEAD uphill along the right hand side of the field. Keep ahead by an aerial mast near the top of the hill, aiming for the hedge row. Pass a concrete marker, then, about 40 metres further on, TURN LEFT onto a track marked by a West Lulworth Country Trail marker (Moth). KEEP AHEAD on a drive past a farmhouse, then follow the track downhill to reach a metalled lane.
TURN LEFT along the lane towards 40mph speed restriction signs. Just beyond the signs, and before the car park signs, FORK RIGHT down a private road to Newlands Farm and Cottages as indicated by a West Lulworth Country Trail (WLCT) sign on a post near the start of the road. BEAR RIGHT at the start of the houses on a footpath signed to Ringstead (4 miles) also marked WLCT. The track is slightly uphill at first.
TURN LEFT through a metal gate marked WLCT and Scratchy Bottom. Go downhill along a fence line towards a caravan park. At the bottom of the field TURN RIGHT with the caravan park on your left. KEEP AHEAD through a metal gate with the WLCT marker. Continue downhill then KEEP AHEAD through another gate into a valley. Follow the valley as it bears left around the higher ground keeping a fence on your right hand side (don’t go through a gate in the fence). At the bottom of the valley, just before you reach the sea, go through a metal gate then TURN LEFT uphill on a coast path. At the top of the rise there are views of the Durdle Door on your right.
Keep ahead across the head of the path to the Durdle Door and turn inland. Follow the main track uphill away from the Durdle Door (passing a dog scoop bin). KEEP AHEAD as the WLCT path forks off right. KEEP AHEAD through a gate into a car park then, almost at the end of the car park by another scoop bin, TURN RIGHT through a gate marked with a finger post signed to West Lulworth and Youth Hostel.
Keep to the left hand side of the field towards the houses of West Lulworth some way off (don’t fork right across the field towards the higher ground and then the cove). Go AHEAD through a metal gate marked with a finger post, still towards the houses. Follow the path through a gap in the fence then DON’T fork left down to a farm but keep on the higher ground to reach a gate marked as a footpath. GO THROUGH THE GATE and down steps, then through another gate into a field. Cross the field keeping close to a fence on your right hand side. GO AHEAD through another gate to reach a metalled lane.
CROSS the lane with care and climb the bank on the opposite side to reach a pavement. TURN LEFT along the pavement. Just before you reach road signs pointing left to Dorchester keep right on a footpath that climbs a little away from the lane. TURN RIGHT on a metalled lane (Bindon Road leading to Sunnyside). A short way on TURN LEFT into Sunnyside as indicated to Youth Hostel. KEEP AHEAD onto a footpath at the end of the road. KEEP RIGHT at a fork (where the left fork goes into the youth hostel). TURN LEFT down a set of steps marked with a yellow arrow marker.
At the bottom of the steps continue ahead to reach a metalled lane. TURN LEFT on the lane (School Lane) and follow it back to The Castle Inn for a drink and meal whether staying or not (your dog will get a drink and treats too).
