Hamish found his own route based on the track around the reservoir and woodland tracks. This provided great views as we made the best of a high area of woodland recently cut. We probably walked about 5 miles.
Simply following the reservoir track - along the west side of the water - would have provided good exercise and pleasant views of the water. Most of the area is fenced and only a few sheep were spotted in the area between the dam and a cattle grid - these seemed likely to have been 'escapees' from nearby hills.
A complete circumnavigation of the reservoir is possible using the track on the western side and a lane on the eastern side (where there is also alternative parking) but its size and shape would make this quite a lengthy walk (more than 15 miles).
The car park, on the south side of the reservoir near the dam (SN 7935 4842 by GPS) has ample space and public toilets.
