Alan visited in February 2018 with a walking friend but not Murphy (who was undergoing a tough time at the vets’ that day). We walked up from Charing with a big loop at the top of the Downs. We enjoyed a good mix of country lanes, woodland and field paths as well as some excellent distant views of The Blean, the coast around Whitstable and Seasalter, The Isle of Sheppey and the Thames Estuary. We’d walked about eight miles when we arrived so were ready for a couple of pints and something to eat. We were delighted with the range of real ales on offer and sampled all four of them. Alan had a cheese, ham and egg ploughman’s, his companion had soup to start followed by a duck Scotch Egg (a specials starter that day). Missing Murphy was mitigated by meeting a Beagle lady. Fortified, we set off on a more direct return to Charing – only about 3 miles or so – and arrived just as it started to rain. A very agreeable day out!
