DogPeople Says : Greyhound Coaching Inn

Hamish stayed for two nights in July 2010. First impressions were good, reception is accessed via a courtyard with attractive flowers and shrubs and Hamish was offered water as soon as we arrived. We were invited to book a table for dinner in the bar or lounge as dogs are not allowed in the restaurant (but the same menu was available to us). We opted for the comfortable lounge and took both evening meals and breakfasts accompanied by Hamish at the same reserved table. This grade 2 listed inn has a range of bedrooms but, as Hamish can no longer manage stairs, we booked a ground floor en-suite with access to the courtyard. The room was of adequate size, clean and comfortably furnished with good Internet access. Two things really stand out about our stay at the Greyhound; the food and friendly staff. Chefs Steve and Will made wonderful dishes and we enjoyed a couple of conversations with them. We enjoyed: garlic king prawns with a homemade satay sauce; pan fried fillets of mackerel; Fusilli Carbonara; garlic bread with Mozzarella; lamb shanks; fillets of pork wrapped in bacon; lemon meringue and lemon cheesecake. These were all good, but the lamb shank was excellent (its sauce and full-flavour mushrooms made it stand out) and the king prawns were quite exceptional (even in our growing and now wide, if not ‘expert’ experience – fantastic flavours and great textures). The well stocked bar included Doombar, Ruddles and Speckled Hen real ales, Thatcher’s Gold cider and the best range of rums we’ve seen in years. Dog water bowls were offered to us several times and willingly brought on request. Breakfasts were good with help-yourself cereals, juices, fruit etc., tea or coffee, toast and cooked breakfasts served to order. Scrambled eggs were particularly good on our first morning – most definitely not quickly produced ‘corporate hotel’ style. The Greyhound was full when we stayed. Despite being so busy everyone was extremely helpful and friendly. Two ‘front of house’ ladies were thoroughly professional, intensely customer focussed and great company. The inn is well placed for breaking long journeys, whether for a stop over or just a meal, as it’s close to junction 20 of the M1 (and not far from the M6 and A14). We would definitely stay again; the place has a really friendly feel – perhaps built on centuries of providing hospitality?
