DogPeople Says : Craig y Nos

Hamish stayed in October 2008. The trip was for the annual family weekend so he was accompanied by 15 human family members. Hamish and his people arrived a day earlier than most of the group – who stayed 3 nights. Hamish stayed in a luxury ground floor atrium room comprising a spacious double bedroom, a twin room (that we didn’t need), a sitting area and good size bathroom (with bath and separate very powerful shower). This was ideal for us as Hamish didn’t need to cope with any stairs and we had our own external access for walks etc. On our first morning, before the group arrived, a table was set for us in the bar at breakfast time – this enabled us to enjoy a comprehensive ‘choose what you want’ breakfast. After the group arrived a table was set in one of the function type bars for the exclusive use of the whole group to have evening meals and breakfast – again accompanied by Hamish (smaller groups with a dog would have been welcome to eat in the main bar). Food and drink were all good (with many positive comments about breakfast and many of the evening meals) – but we had problems with service accompanying these. On our first night – when a large wedding party was using the hotel, and we couldn’t use the main bar – we had a long wait, the wrong beer was delivered, the room was cold and neither meal was well cooked. The first group meal was delicious, but, again, the service was below par – two steaks ordered with chips were the first meals delivered but the chips came last (other than one meal that was ‘lost’ between the waitress and the chef … so arrived after many of the group had finished their meals). In this regard the service we received was the least effective in many years of family get-togethers (but we are a demanding group). The second group evening meal showed an improvement in meal scheduling … but the bar had run out of real ale (a specific need mentioned when we made our booking). The third and final group meal was cooked to our requirements – two curries. Everyone enjoyed this and the service was excellent – chef even asked how we would prefer the food served. Other positives are helpfulness of front of house staff and a great location with walking from the door. The range of walking suited those in the group who wanted demanding hill walks as well as those who valued more ‘gentle’ options in the hotel grounds and adjacent country park (Hamish was in the latter category – morning, noon and night). The hotel offers a fairly demanding guided dog walk each afternoon – but Hamish was too old to enjoy this. To summarise, Craig y Nos has great potential. The building is fabulous and must be a challenge to maintain and develop; the owner describes it as ‘work in progress’. We think the same could be said of aspects of service; we found all the people friendly and helpful (the group were especially grateful when a self guided tour of the castle was extended and explained by staff without being asked) … but, maybe, guest experience can still be improved. Overall, the family will look back on this stay with happy memories, the location, food and staff made it a positive experience. We received a positive response to our feedback and will definitely consider returning, not least because we have admiration for efforts being made to revitalise this important historic building.
