Hamish and his people came for dinner a couple of times in April 2006. He was made welcome in the bar and a special table was set for us in the lounge on our second visit. The hotel is in an attractive old country house set in substantial gardens with fabulous views (the sun setting behind snow clad mountains in the distance when we visited was wonderful). Hotel staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful – if we didn’t have other arrangements made we would have been tempted to stay! The food was sensational. Alan’s first meal included duck salad, flank of beef and a crème brulee (overall the best meal he’d had for a very long time). Jo, a dessert expert, was especially impressed by her peach Bakewell Tart. We both started the second meal with button mushrooms with blue cheese and garlic. We were both very impressed – so often it is hard to discern the different flavours in this type of starter but the mushrooms and cheese were quite distinctive … delicious! Main courses included venison (which Jo thoroughly enjoyed) and a tasty lamb steak. We don’t have the slightest hesitation in recommending this as a place to eat, we are confident it would be a great place to stay and are certain it would be well worth stopping for a drink after a good walk if that's all you have time for. UPDATE – a visit from The Dog Rambler in September 2009 … We stayed there last September with our 2 dogs (two Dalmatians, Struan and Talaidh). The owners and folk working there were so welcoming and helpful, even having a torch for that late night walk when we'd forgotten to take one. The dogs were very happy laid out in front of the fire in the bar. The hotel has probably come on quite a way since you were there last in terms of the decor and layout. The food sounds still as fantastic as when you visited. Fantastic packed home made packed lunches too.
