DogPeople Says : Bear Hotel

Hamish visited for a couple of days in May 2002. He stayed in a superior room attached to the hotel but accessed via the courtyard. This proved very useful as he could easily come and go for 'convenience' walks. It was also helpful when we needed to wash his paws after a 16 mile walk in the Beacons. The Bear made this even easier by providing a bucket (we had brought his towel etc. with us). The staff were all very friendly and took an active interest in Hamish. They were very accommodating making it easier for us to take breakfast in the dining room (where dogs are not allowed). We could have had a continental breakfast in the room if we had preferred. Main meals in the bar were very good - we ate there in the evenings. Choosing from a wide range of dishes was the only difficulty. We were very pleased with the main courses and puddings we enjoyed. Everything was beautifully presented and cheerfully served. The bar also served a good selection of beers and wines. Crickhowell is a lovely spot well placed for the Beacons and Sugar Loaf (mountain near Abergavenny). The meadow running by the river - 10 minutes walk from the Bear - is a great spot for a leisurely walk. Update October 2004: Hamish returned with the family group – 15 humans in all! Our positive experience in 2002 was repeated in every aspect – even with the added challenges posed by such a big group. The Bear rose to every challenge. They provided special rooms for a family meal on Saturday and Monday evenings (allowing us to make the most of both restaurant and bar menus) and for a family get together when three more of the family – including our youngest member – arrived for a visit on Sunday. On this occasion Hamish had an ‘indoor' room but only yards from an external door onto a covered balcony connecting a wing to the original part of the hotel. This made it easy to take him in and out when necessary. The balcony also provided a great place to clean his paws and for us to put on boots, gaiters etc for our walking trips. The long established owners of this award winning hotel and restaurant are very dog welcoming – a number of other canine guests were in residence during our stay. The bar too is a regular venue for dog visitors. A superb location for a short break or holiday – with much more variety of walks than we realised on our first visit (see Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal route in walks directory for an example).
