DogPeople Says : The Bear of Rodborough Hotel

This was the second hotel Tia a black Labrador stayed at during her tour of the Cotswolds in September 2012 with her mistress and one of the directors. Dogs are welcome in the Woodchester bedrooms, a self contained building at the rear of the hotel. This suited us very well as it had quick easy access to the hotel grounds and garden for Tia. We were in a comfortable well equipped ground floor twin bedroom which had a nice view over the valley. Tia was provided with a bowl and rubber feeding dog mat in the bedroom which we found useful. The hotel gardens also have several dog water bowls and litter bins. We ate our meals in the Bear Bar where dogs are welcome on a lead. There are also terraces providing attractive outside seating options for drinks or dining. In the evenings we enjoyed excellent meals from the Bar Menu including Seared Salmon with hot potato and tomato salad; rump steak (on Thursday Steak Night at The Bear); lemon tart and warm treacle tart both with clotted cream. There was a good range of real ales on offer including Prescott Hill Climb; Butcombe Bitter, Stroud Brewery Organic Ale plus Ashton Press Cider. A selection of wines is available by the glass, we enjoyed some Belvino Rose. We also visited Bin Ends at the Bear, a new onsite wine warehouse selling quality wines. Breakfast is usually in the restaurant however if dog owners ask staff on duty they can take breakfast accompanied by their dog in the Bear Bar or outside on a terrace. There was a good range of cereals, fruits, croissants and yoghurts followed by freshly prepared cooked dishes we tried scrambled and poached eggs, bacon and meaty sausages. A choice of fish was available for breakfasts plus trout one morning. The staff made us and Tia feel very welcome during our stay. The Bear is in a lovely elevated setting and is ideally located for walks on both Rodborough and Minchinhampton Commons. We did a short walk with Tia from the hotel which can be found in the Walks and Beaches directory for Gloucestershire.
