On a minor road 1 mile E of Silchester (OS Map 175; ref SU 643624).
In the Iron Age, the region in which Silchester is located was part of the tribal territory of the Atrebates. During the Roman period their tribal centre became known as Calleva Atrebatum, growing into a substantial settlement of over 400,000 square metres (100 acres). Though none of the ancient buildings are visible today, archaeological investigations have given us an idea of the town's overall layout and how this would have changed over time. On the edge of the Roman town, outside the walls, are the remains of a rural amphitheatre built AD 50-75 and able to seat about 3,000 people.
All year at any reasonable time.
