Hamish visited in September 2006 on a glorious day. The custodian was very friendly and helpful and explained the relationship with the ruined castle and a French prisoner of war. The ruins, information boards and audio tour were interesting. The spot, as is often the case with castles, was impressive with good views, especially from the top of the motte. After exploring the castle we had a picnic using one of the picnic tables on the meadow below the castle (the castle shop’s toilet was welcome too). After that we enjoyed the woodland walk, returning beside the river where we saw a Heron.
