In Netley, 4 miles SE of Southampton, facing Southampton Water (OS Map 196; ref SU 453089).
The most complete surviving Cistercian monastery in southern England, with almost all the walls of its 13th and 14th-century church still standing, along with many monastic buildings. Though under royal patronage, maritime Netley was never wealthy, allegedly due to the demands and dep-redations of mariners. After the Dissolution, the buildings were adapted as a mansion, now vanished: later attempts to demolish the church were abandoned when falling masonry crushed the wrecker.
