Parking 60m from entrance; uneven surface at far end. Disabled visitors may be set down within the fort; please telephone in advance. Off A32, in Gunner's Way, Elson; on N side of Gosport (OS Map 196; ref SU 596020).
One of a number of forts built in the 1850s to protect Portsmouth and its vital harbour. Largely unaltered, the parade ground, gun ramps and moated keep can all be viewed. Portchester Castle - which acted as a prison during the Napoleonic Wars - is nearby.
The Fort opens occasionally for pre booked tours and Heritage Open Days 7 - 10 Sep and is available for private hire, please call 02392 378291.
Dogs on leads are welcome - contact site for any restrictions. Assistance dogs are welcome everywhere.
