The castle crowns a lonely hilltop with dramatic views over the surrounding hills. It was built about 1480 by Thomas Cochrane, Earl of Mar and favourite of James III. It still retains fine architectural details and is surrounded by the ramparts of an Iron Age hillfort. Access on foot only, route is steep and can be wet at times. View exterior only.
Visit Historic Scotland's website for details.
Dogs are permitted in the grounds if kept on a leash. They are not permitted in roofed buildings. Owners are asked to be sensitive to the effect of their dogs on others, esepcially children. Poop scoops are available from the steward at staffed sites. Please clear up after your dog.
