DogPeople Says : The White Horse Inn (Clun)

Murphy stayed in The Blue Room for five nights in September 2015. The weather was mixed – but gave him opportunity to really test the accommodation. The first day’s walk was soaking – both Murphy and his man were wet through by the time they returned from a 10 mile or so walk. Murphy had brought his own large dog towel – and a couple of smaller ones - after Murphy had been dried The White Horse’s people took the large towel, as well as the man’s dripping waterproofs, and dried them in their drying room. By the end of the evening everything was good to go – luckily not needed for the rest of the trip! Murphy took his own food and water bowls but these were available in the room along with a food bowl mat. Murphy was welcome in the bar at all times and was with his man for breakfast. There are plenty of local walk options so Murphy was able to have his first thing in the morning and last thing at night comfort walks. All in all this is a great B&B from a dog’s perspective. Pretty good for humans too! Typically for pub accommodation there is some noise in the evenings but ear plugs are provided for those who like it quiet at bedtime – we had no problems. Breakfasts were excellent with every egg option tried and enjoyed. The staff are friendly and flexible and didn’t mind being asked for non menu variations. For example, scrambled egg and bacon were great on slightly less active days. For days with a long walk planned the Full English was certainly full and backed by plenty of cereals as well as toast and preserves. Evening meals were taken on five nights. All were good with very good highlights. The steak and kidney pudding, French apple tart, haddock and chips and local cheese board were worthy of special mention. The White Horse is the only eating out option in The Clun Valley on Monday and Tuesday evenings – so be sure to book a table in the bar so you can eat with your dog at your side on these evenings. The bar has a range of real ales and other drinks. It is very popular with locals and visitors (human and canine). The regulars are friendly and include a few colourful characters. If you’ve not been to this part of Shropshire before it will be easy to overlook the beauty of the countryside and fabulous walking options. Even if you’ve been before its appeal may slip from mind. If you like walking with your dog, good food and good company you should seriously consider a holiday break or day out at The White Horse.
